Should Singapore endorse gay sex - or as put by Mr. Ho Kwon Ping, "decriminalise" gay sex?

The rise of gays and lesbians could probably be attributed to the birth of a more liberal society, as prominently observed in the West.

People are beginning to explore arenas never once thought of by the ancient conservative Stone Age humans. In ancient China, the staunch belief of everyone - men and women alike - is that women are born to serve men. A women's duties are to the household - to cook, wash, look after the children, and of course the most important of all, to carry on the family name. Every men's duties are to work and be a financial provider of the family. Everyone conformed to that ideology, simply because they were all brought up and instilled with these values since young.

There were no TVs or western influences that could penetrate as deeply into the society now than compared to the past. Hence, the Chinese were not affected, to say the least, by external influences.

Then came the period were everyone said goodbye to their pigtails and embraced a slightly more liberal society. But still, these ideologies were adhered to.

Slowly, external influences were brought about by the increasing number of TV sets and computers due to the country's affluence. This is when the big change starts taking place, moulding to society and teens largely based on what they see online or no TV screens.

Eventually, here we are today - where sex is an essential and integral part of a relationship (whether you are married or not. In the past, a couple can only consumate after marriage. People who are pregnant before marriage are deemed as black sheeps, and in some part of China, are stoned to death, literally.), when we rely more on Internet then ever, an era where our beliefs are constantly changing, dictated by Hollywood stars like Miley Cyrus, Linsay Lohan, Britney Spears and whoever else.

The advancement of technology had also aided in speeding up this process. Today, if you're unhappy about your own sex, no problem, just visit the doctor to do a transexual operation. The only deterring factor is probably money.

What sparked me to write such an article is after reading an article written by Mr. Ho Kwon Ping, which was published in TODAY on Sept 8th.

Click here to read more about Mr. Ho's article.

Personally, I do agree with Mr. Ho's views on gay sex, but only to a small extent.

#1: Gays are tolerated, not accepted.

Mr. Ho argued that there is a significant difference in gays being merely "tolerated because gays are seen to be at the leading edge of the "creative class" ... and being accepted..", which I agree. Gays are fundamentally humans, or in scientific terms 'homo sapiens'. They deserve the same respect and dignity that every other individual deserves.

In its Declaration on the Principles of Tolerance, UNESCO offers a definition of tolerance that most closely matches our philosophical use of the word:

Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance is harmony in difference. - http://www.tolerance.org/about/tolerance.html

Another definition of TOLERANCE (n.):

The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others. -http://www.thefreedictionary.com/tolerance

The definition of Acceptance, on the other hand, though encompassing almost simliar meaning to that of "tolerance", is distinctly different.

ACCEPTANCE:

1. The act or process of accepting.
2. The state of being accepted or acceptable.
3. Favorable reception; approval.
4. Belief in something; agreement.

The main essence carried in the word "acceptance", which draws a line from "tolerance" is the word "favourable". It carries nuances of emotions which are good, or shed a good light on whatever people have come to consensus with.

Hence, "tolerance" is not tantamount to "acceptance".

Therefore, I have successfully proven that these 2 terms are distinct, yet simliar in some ways. However, do note that I did not express that I agree to the legalising of gay sex.

#2: Decriminalise Gay Sex In Singapore

Secondly, Mr. Ho argued that since many countries have "decriminalised' (in Mr. Ho's terms) gay sex, and had even allowed or celebrated gay marriages across the globe, Singapore should do the same too.

He pointed out that "Singapore is known to be economically liberal, but socially conservative."

Below are some sources I've found to state Singapore's current stand on the matter:

In an article published in Oct 24, 2007:

"Singapore has legalised oral and anal sex between heterosexual couples, but retained a law which criminalises intercourse between gay men.

In the city-state's first major penal code amendments in 22 years, parliament repealed a section criminalising "carnal intercourse against the order of nature".

Parliament however kept the penal code's section 377A, which makes sex between men a criminal offence, rejecting a petition by gay rights activists and their non-homosexual supporters to abolish the law as well."

History of Gay in Singapore:

When the Japanese invaded Singapore in February 1942, Japanese laws replaced previous colonial laws. Gay sex was never criminalised in Japan and would now have been technically legal in Singapore. However, given the lack of human rights and rule of law under the Japanese occupation, this change in law was a technical and historical quirk, reflective of a different legal tradition, rather than an expansion of real rights for gay people.

Anecdotally, gay cruising continued in post-war Singapore in back alleys, public parks and toilets. In the most part, this was ignored by the police and no one was charged under section 377 of the Singapore Penal Code.

Did You Know?

Homosexuality and transsexuality were listed as conditions in a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) 'Directory of Diseases' (disease code 302).

Yes, I agree that many countries are legalising gay sex in their legislations. Among them are countries such as Jerusalem, Japan and most evidently seen in European nations.

JERUSALEM:

January 16,2004

The Jewish Community Relations Council, the major public policy voice of the Jewish community in Greater Boston, has voted overwhelmingly to endorse same-sex marriage.

Several Jewish organizations had already endorsed same-sex marriage, including the largest Jewish denomination in the country, the Union for Reform Judaism, and the Northeast region of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the association of Reform rabbis that voted unanimously this week to support same-sex marriage. But same-sex marriage is opposed by leaders of Orthodox Judaism, a denomination that makes up a small minority of Greater Boston's 250,000-member Jewish community. The board of trustees of the Jewish Community Relations Council, made up of Jewish religious and social service organizations and prominent Jewish individuals, on Wednesday night voted 51-5 in favor of the resolution endorsing same-sex marriage. -http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2004/01/16/jewish_group_oks_same_sex_marriage/

Many gays commerate or celebrate their decision with thousands other gays alike in an annual event called the World Pride. World Pride is an international gathering of homosexual, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered individuals scheduled in Jerusalem in August. World Pride is a 10-day festival planned meticulously by gay leaders worldwide.

The Mission Statement for WorldPride 2006 is clear: “Jerusalem WorldPride will come to Jerusalem. Jerusalem WorldPride 2006 will bring a new focus to an ancient city through a massive demonstration of [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender] dignity, pride, and boundary-crossing celebration...from the home of the world’s three great religions; we will proclaim that love knows no borders.”

JAPAN:

Unlike in Muslim countries, homosexuality is legal in Japan. Male prostitution is unregulated by the law and Tokyo bans anti-gay job firings. As a primarily Buddhist and Shinto nation, there's very little in the way of religious discrimination. There's also no shame attacted to depicting same-sex love in books, comics, and television.

NETHERLANDS:

They saw their first gay-marriage in 2001.

Around the world, countries are coming to terms with how to treat homosexual couples - and the trend in many is toward liberalizing laws. In Denmark, civil unions with the same rights as marriage have been around since 1989, and other Nordic countries followed suit in the 1990s.

The Dutch were the first to eliminate any distinction between gay and straight, striking all references to gender in the marriage laws. Belgium soon did the same. Canada jumped to the forefront of gay rights in North America in June when it announced plans to legalize same-sex marriages.

Many same-sex couples streamed north to marry in Ottawa and British Columbia after courts in those provinces authorized weddings.

In most of Africa, homosexuality is illegal and gay marriage unthinkable. But in South Africa, gay rights were enshrined in the post-apartheid constitution and some groups are lobbying for the right to marry. -http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/03/04/world/main604084.shtml

Here is the legal status of gay marriage in Europe and other parts of the world:

Belgium: Legalized gay marriage in 2002.

Britain: Plans to introduce legislation soon authorizing civil unions giving gay couples legal recognition with most of the rights enjoyed by married partners.

Canada: Considering legislation to legalize gay marriage.

Denmark: The first country to legalize same-sex unions in 1989, later giving couples adoption rights. Other Nordic countries followed in the 1990s.

France: Allows civil unions since 2000.

Germany: Introduced civil unions in 2001.

Italy: Does not recognize same-sex unions.

The Netherlands: Became the first country to legalize gay marriages outright in 2001.

Portugal: Lesbian and gay couples who live together acquire the same rights as heterosexuals in common-law marriages.

Spain: Like most Roman Catholic countries, Spain does not recognize gay unions. But some northern regions, such as Navarra and the Basque country, recognize gay common-law couples and accord them rights of spouses.

South Africa: Recognized gay rights in its constitution after apartheid ended in 1994. Activists are preparing litigation to have the common law definition of marriage extended to include same-sex couples.

Switzerland: Its largest city, Zurich, started recognizing registered gay couples last July. Geneva also recognizes same-sex couples, although grants them fewer rights. Swiauthorities are considering whether to introduce a national law to harmonize treatment throughout the country.

However, I beg to differ pertaining to Mr. Ho's call for Singapore to legalise gay sex.

And there are signs that the world has yet to come to terms with the notion totally.

Let me prove it to you.

JERUSALEM:

The religious leaders, Sheik Abed es-Salem Menasra, deputy mufti of Jerusalem; Rev. Michel Sabbagh, Latin patriarch; Rev. Aris Shirvanian, Armenian patriarch; Rabbi Shlomo Amar, Sephardic chief rabbi, and Rabbi Yona Metzger, Ashkenazi chief rabbi expressed their concern that the festival (World Pride) would desecrate the holy city and communicate the mistaken impression that homosexuality is acceptable.

Shlomo Amar said, “They are creating a deep and terrible sorrow that is unbearable. It hurts all of the religions. We are all against it.”

Dr. Michael Evans said,"..you can be certain that WorldPride’s gay pastors will proclaim to the citizens of Jerusalem that the homosexual populace is wonderful Christians who represent you and me. If it happens every Jew worldwide will see this sight, as well as the one billion Muslims. All will think that is who we are and what we represent."

USA:

Feburary 25, 2004

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush endorsed a constitutional amendment Tuesday that would restrict marriage to two people of the opposite sex but leave open the possibility that states could allow civil unions.

"The union of a man and a woman is the most enduring human institution, honored and encouraged in all cultures and by every religious faith," Bush said.

June 27, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO—After several weeks of silence on the issue of same-sex marriage, Sen. John McCain has made it official. The presumptive Republican nominee for president has endorsed efforts to ban gay marriage in California.

Long Term Impact of Gay Sex On Society:

Lynn Wardle, a professor of law at Brigham Young University, said that legalizing same-sex marriage or civil unions endangers not only marriage as an institution but will endanger the civil rights" of those who don't approve of it.

"It's about the right to express opposition, and those who do so already suffer harassment and hostility."

He likened the consequences to the effect of divorce on children, recalling debates on the subject when he was a law school student. The notion of harm to children "was resoundingly rejected ... everybody said it's tough initially but it will be OK and there will be no lasting effects."

Yet, within a decade social scientists began documenting very distinct harm to children, he said. "There is now a large body of irrefutable evidence of the serious, harmful effects for children of divorce that have been documented."While the impact is "temporary for two-thirds, it is lifelong for about one-third," he said.

Making same-sex marriage legal "will harm you and your family the same way polygamous marriage to 14-year-olds will harm you. ... It will transform the meaning, expectations and practices of marriage as a social institution and affects everyone who has a stake in marriage.

"Legalizing such relationships would affect the functioning of the entire legal system, he said, "from taxes to torts, from wills to medical treatment. The laws will change, and we'll reconceptualize our understanding that the union of two men or two women is equally important."

Costs Of Legalising Gay Marriage on Society:

1. Debunk common belief on opposite sex marriages, especially to teens.

2. Adverse effects on the birth rates plaguing gray nations.

3. Increased gay sexual activity in public.

4. Against moral beliefs as reinforced by various religions.

5. Wrong ideas conveyed to the generations onwards.

I have conducted a survey with Singaporeans spanning between ages 18-50.

Here's a brief questionaire:

Q1. Are you in favour of Singapore legalising Gay Sex?

YES - 33.3%

NO - 66.6%

Q2. If you are in favour, why?

They answered that they see no problem in legalising gay sex, simply because it does not affect them.

Q3. If you are not in favour, why?

They answered that they think that it'll have a negative impact on the society.

Q4. If you are not in favour, will you do something about it (e.g. Write a petition to the government)?

YES: 0%

NO: 100%

Q5. If someone wrote a petition and asks you to sign your name on it, will you?

YES: 30%

NO: 70%

Reason #1: Their names will be submitted to the government.

Reason #2: They are too lazy to do anything.

Conclusion:

Most expressed that they have no objections about the legalising of gay sex, as long as there are no public displays of "indecent" acts such as kissing.

Though it can be argued that many couples do publicly kiss, the parameters of what is deemed as "indecent" for gay couples is somewhat wider, and stricter.

"You won't want your child to see 2 guys kissing in public and have him/her questioning you about it right?", said one of my friend.

Open-minded as Singaporeans may be portrayed, there is still a certain degree of conservativeness in the society that does not allow lee-way to such matters.

The US Race to the White House turns ugly as McCain takes a swing at Obama.

The Catfight of the Year Award - if there is ever such an award - should unarguably be awarded to the Obama and McCain campaign.

Just when almost everyone thought that McCain was muddle-headed by choosing a little-known Alaskan governor - and to add to that, the first woman to represent the Republicans - we were proven wrong.

Since Palin delivered a combative speech at the GOP Conference which drew overpowering applauses, her image has been stronger than ever. Her sex, her religion and her status as a typical average American mother have been drawing women supporters - especially those who initially supported Hillary Clinton.

Everything, basically, whether is it the dirty scandals or the rumours for Palin's lack of expertise had been cleverly turned to her advantage, and subtly covered up by her charisma.

As pointed out by Mr. Obama, she has "been receiving so much media attention..".

Mr. McCain's management had advised him to appear with Mrs. Palin all the time to boost his image. And that's what he did. He even started refering to his campaign as led by "the pair of us", when he addressed the roaring crowd with Mrs. Palin by his side.

Then let's take a look into what Obama had been doing.

Many think that Mr. Obama may be overshadowed by Mrs. Palin due to the extensive exposure to the mainstream media recently - though according to Professor Andrew White, Singapore Management of Singapore, School of Law, said that America's "mainstream media tend to favour the Democrats..", and hence resulting in the birth of FOX news, which aims to present an objective view to Americans.

Blow #1

Delivered by Mrs. Palin, who used the GOP as a platform to rail against Obama and deflect criticisms about her own lack of foreign policies, she said "What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.

Obama's Response: Palin's message is like a "Lipstick on a Pig"

"We've been talking about change when we were up in the polls and when we were down in the polls," Obama said as surveys suggested John McCain and Sarah Palin have overhauled his lead for the November 4 election.

"The other side, suddenly, they're saying 'we're for change too.' Now think about it, these are the same folks that have been in charge for the last eight years," the Illinois senator told a crowd of 2,400 people in Lebanon, Virginia.

"You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig. You can wrap up an old fish in a piece of paper and call it change. It's still going to stink after eight years. We've had enough," he exclaimed to a standing ovation.

Firing back, Former Republican Massachusetts governor Jane Swift said Obama was guilty of "disgraceful comments, comparing our vice presidential nominee, Governor Palin, to a pig."

Blow #2

Just last week, Mr. McCain expressed his admiration and respect for Mr. Obama - well, that was last week.

Come this week, while Mr. Obama dished out his policies on Education, the McCain campaign timely released an advertisement that mocked at Obama's sex education proposal. They claimed that Obama is aiming at giving "Comprehensive sex Education" to "kindergargeners on sex even before they can read" for that matter. The ad ended with these 3 phrases: "Obama. Wrong for Education. Wrong for your Family."

The Obama campaign retorted the McCain campaign, stating that " It is shameful and downright perverse for the McCain campaign to use a bill that was written to protect young children... Last week, John McCain told TIME Magazine that he couldn't define what honour was. Now we know why."

Though the Obama campaign swings back at the McCain campaign, many argued that it was not as spectacular or impactful as what the McCain campaign delivered in the ad.

Click here to see the video on the McCain's campaign advertisement.

Previously, Mr. McCain attacked Obama's energy plan, accused Obama of "playing the race card", said that "Obama's a celebrity, not a politician" and claimed that he "will get Osama Bin Laden" - if he was voted President.

Did the Obama campaign suffer a backlash as a result?

Let's take a look at the Polls.

Poll Statistics:

The Daily Telegraph in London

Scope of Survey: Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Russia

Period: May

Obama: 52%
McCain: 15%

All Women

August September

Obama: 50% 49%
McCain: 36% 46%

Women Under 50 (18-49 yr old)

August September

Obama: 54% 47%

McCain: 35% 49%

Analysis: Sarah Palin was both a gender and generational pick to woo voters.

Will Bring Real Change

June September

Obama: 48% 52%

McCain: 21% 35%

Analysis: Sarah Palin allowed McCain to get out of the box with the Bush-McCain relation, explaining his out-of-the-box pick of candidate. He reinvented his campaign with her help.

Dinner with Which Candidate?

Obama: 40%

Palin: 33%

McCain: 15%

Biden: 7%

- NBC News

The Sarah Palin ticket definitely brought about a huge impact as reflected in the polls to the McCain team. She has also "tripled the excitement factor", as Chuck Todd, NBC Political Commentor said.

As the countdown to Nov 4 starts getting into a dead lock, it'll be fascinating to watch Obama and Palin battle head-on, especially on the "Bridge to Nowhere" issue.

Thailand's Constitutional Court's verdict: Samak must step down immediately.

Thailand's Court have ruled that Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and his Cabinet will have to resign with immediate effect as of yesterday afternoon, though the nine judges were noted to be unanimous in this decision.

PM Samak is coerced into stepping down as he was deemed to have broken Thailands's Conflict- of-Interest Law in his hosting of a cook programme on TV for about 7 years before he took office as Prime Minister.

The Court argued that Samak had received payments from the firm for hosting 'Tasting and Complaining and All Set at 6pm', despite Mr. Samak claiming that he had only received payment for providing the required ingredients and transportation fees for the cook show.

"The defendant has violated Article 267 of the constitution, and his position as prime minister has ended," said Chat Chonlaworn, the court's chief justice who headed the nine-judge panel that issued the ruling.
While 6 of the judges decided that Mr. Samak was an "employee", 3 others labelled him under the "business partner" category.

Meanwhile, this verdict was greeted by enthusiastic cheers and weeping from the PAD protestors.

Though derailed from the Parliament, it may only be a temporary setback for him as his party People's Power Party (PPP) revealed that they would consider renominating Samak for the elections this Friday for the post. Mr. Samak remains mum pertaining to questions on whether he will be accepting his party's decision, fuelling speculation amongst many.
Especially voracious for Mr. Samak to disappear from the political realm are the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protestors who remained outside the government house, ready to pounce on Mr. Samak if he ever steps into the Parliament house again.

On the other hand, the ruling coalition had explicitly stated that they are currently in the midst of considering other potential candidates for the PM seat.
However, The Court ruled that Mr. Samak's party will continue to remain as caretaker administration until Parliament fills the Prime minister's post.

This implies that the senior deputy prime minister, Somchai Wongsawat, will serve as acting prime minister, who happens to be Mr. Thaksin's brother-in-law.

Seen as a proxy of the once popular Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who got ousted in 2006 due to corruptions charges, PAD is adament in throwing Samak out of the political realm forever. PAD, which comprises of a conglomerate of royalists, urban residents and union activists, were first formed in 2006 to oust Thaksin, with peaceful demonstrations evolving into a military coup.

Mr. Thaksin is now seeking refuge in Britain, and refuses to return to Thailand, claiming that he would receive unfair treatment if he were to return.

Professional Insights:
Ji Ungpakorn, a political science lecturer at Chulalongkorn University, criticized the ruling as being out of proportion and said it aided the protesters.

"I think it is the role of judges to decide what is a serious issue, taking into account the spirit as well as the letter of the law," Ji said. "It is a minor issue being used against the government to attack it and manipulate it."

Ji said he doubted the protest alliance would voluntarily give up its struggle no matter how many of its demands are met. "They want to wreck Thai society to have their 'new order,'" he said.

Suriyasai, the alliance spokesman, told the protesters that the ruling was "proof of our legitimacy in staging the rally against the government."

"We should continue our sacred duty because it's not yet done," he added. "We would like to warn the Parliament to endorse clean and decent individuals for the new Cabinet and to be the prime minister."

Suriyasai listed almost a dozen points supported by the alliance, touching on populist and nationalist themes, including safeguarding Thailand's territory and resources, prosecuting people who insult the monarchy, and halting the privatization of state enterprises. - USA TODAY

Mr. Samak currently faces a defamation suit and 3 possible corruption cases. The Election Comission has recommended that the PPP be dissolved facing vote fraud.

A thought suddenly dawned on me when I was in the midst of watching Wall.E today.

Aside from the absolutely adorable robot figure that dominated the movie screen, I've learnt that Wall.E stands for Waste Allocator, Lot Lifter, and the "E" goes unknown.

The show opened with a scene of Wall.E crushing heaps of waste into square cubes, then the scene progressed to a bird eye's view of an entire typical New York City.

However, glamour was not even in the picture - not even a hint of life. What I saw were tall overpowering towers that were made of cubes of waste, waste, and more waste.

That was one scary picture, but at the rate that we humans are dumping rubbish and hurting Mother Nature, it comes as no surprise if we do actually reach this stage one day where all humans find it necessary to evacuate to a new planet and invent robots to clear up Earth while we're gone enjoying life somewhere else.

One of Nature's largest dusbin:
300 and 150 million litter respectively cover the bottom of the Mediterranean and of the North sea. 60% are plastics that will last hundreds of year.

Statistical Evidence:

In the past twenty years, solid waste produced by industrial countries has tripled on a average of up to 475kg per person and per year. If the current trend remains, the global production of waste should rise by 70% by 2020. In Northern countries, which are already and by far the main waste producers, this rise could reach 200%. - www.youngreporters.org/

Key figures

A European bin contains 23% organic products (animal and vegetal), 33% paper/cardboard, 5% plastic, 8% glass, 8% metal, 3% textile, 13% various (china, dust…)

Europe counts 8700 dumps containing 1,2 billion tons of waste, producing greenhouse methane gas and contaminating ground waters (Eurostat)

On average, paper can be recycled 8 to 12 times. It is used to make more paper or cardboard. (Eco-emballages)

The entire amount of aluminium thrown per year by the USA would be enough to renew their entire fleet of commercial aircraft every three months (Worldwatch Institute)

In the wild, it takes 3 months to a paper tissue to disappear, 10 year to a tin can, 200 years to a plastic bag. (Ademe)

Recycling of 12 soft drink bottles can produce one pillow, 11 plastic bottles = one watering can, 670 cans= one bicycle, 19000 tin cans = one car. (Eco-emballages) - www.youngreporters.org/

This is a post-shock analysis of Sarah Palin's ticket to the White House.

"McCain is no dumb man.", said Associate Professor Andrew White, School of Law, Singapore Management University.

We shall explore why he said that and the reasons to substantiate his arguement.

All along, the media have been playing up on the scandals of Sarah Palin that appeared to be leaked out too readily, just as if someone were spoon-feeding the media with juicy news.

First it was her lack of experience that generated doubts of many Americans, then it was the news of her new born down-syndrome boy that got the people's admiration. Next it was the news of her 17-year old daughter who is reportedly 5 months pregnant. Following that is the breakout of her apparently abusing her power as the governor of Alaska with issues intertwined with her ex-sister in-law. Last but not least came the fact that her husband got involved in drink driving many years ago.

After taking in this plethora of news, I started to think that maybe Sarah Palin was the wrong choice, and like many others thought - She was chosen by McCain without much thought. But yet I felt that there must be something in Palin that McCain saw.

Today, I finally knew what it was - She is plagued with issues that any bourgeoisies (or middle Americans) will find themselves into. Money Issues, a son posted to Iraq, Teenage issues, problems tagged with raising a child - not to mention a down-syndrome child. It is difficult. And Palin's still taking it all in.

This remarkable woman had not only juggled all these throughtout the years, but had also weathered through to become a governor - so she has executive experience, as they call it. She has experience in working for the environment, and in the sector of oil (which was not mentioned at all By Prof. White).

What was mentioned and reiterated by Prof. White as a sign of emphasis is: Her values, her personality, and her believes all "resonates" with that of Mr. John McCain and that of the "middle Americans".

Thus, his argument is, because Palin IS essentially living the life of a middle American, she is hence able to comprehend and relate to the problems they face in their daily lives.

Furthermore, she has executive experience - which Obama does not have. "And Palin is ultimately running as Vice-President, but Obama clearly stated that he is running as a Presidential candidate.", said Prof. White.

Adding on to that, Prof. White also said that while "Palin complements McCain's strengths and adds value to his campaign", he does not see how Biden has added values to Obama's campaign.

I find myself agreeing, though however to only a small extent, that Palin is the right candidate because of her backgroud and how she can relate to the middle Americans. In every country, the middle class are always the bulk of the population, and often the most important to court for especially in terms of votes. Their needs are not to be neglected.

On the other hand, though Palin has given an "outstanding speech" as perceived by many during the Republicans Convention, I still have my reservations about her capabilties and the scandals trailing at her feet.

Critiques have also mentioned that with McCain at 72, he could have one feet stuck in the grave already. If the Republicans are to win the elections, and during the term Mr. McCain passes on (*Pls note that this is only a stipulated scenario), Palin would not have the capabilties to take over the post as President.

Responding to his, Prof. White only said that the fact is that "Palin is running for Vice-Presidency, and not Presidency..".

Only time will tell if she's truly capable. Of course, that is if the Republicans win the Nov 4 elections.

Meanwhile, I noticed that McCain have been using the word "CHANGE" in his campaign as well. Isn't that what Obama promised right from the start?

So, who do you find yourself agreeing with - Obama or McCain?

The Thailand saga has happened so swiftly that many may ask how did Mr. Samak get himself into such hot waters, and why do the people hate him so?

Here's why:

Why was Samak under fire?

#1: Samak was the first to speculate about a military coup, sending the financial markets plunging and forcing the army commander to rush out in denial.

#2: Thailand's economy is plunging and Samak has yet to produce any credible policies to address the issue.

#3: Samak's support towards the Cambodia's bid to have an ancient temple on the border with Thailand listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site sparked a nationalist backlash. - CNA

Whenever I ask about migration, Singaporeans would always jump at the first chance to relate to me on where they would like to migrate to, and why. A typical answer would be, "Singapore's too stressful and competitive".

I admit, I used to fall under that category of people who would grab the first plane available out of Singapore. The reason why the idea of migrating is so appealing to me is simply because I want to escape - escape from all the stress I am facing in school, all the boring lectures I have to endure, and at the end of the day, be labelled as a "failure" by teachers.

However, over the years, my perception have changed. I remember excitedly telling my friend one day that I want to migrate to this country, and the kind of life I wish to live. And then he said, "Stress is everywhere across boundaries. Did you think that by just running away to another country, stress won't follow you?" It dawned on me the reality of life. And the reality of life is, yes, like my friend mentioned, "Stress is everywhere".

My parents had always taught me to climb up back from where I fell, take the stress, and carry on. Life is just like that.

Competitveness is evident in every society in every country - it just depends where or who you are to that particular society. Let me give you an example: A farmer in Australia would probably love his job (like the farmer I met when I was in Australia). Compare him to a lawmaker who's under a lot of pressure due to court cases. However, they can both be happy simply because they love their jobs! They must have came across the word "stress" more than once in their lives. Stress is part and parcel of your growing up life - be it a doctor, a teacher or even a road sweeper.

Treat it as something that pushes you to improve yourself everytime, a challenge to overcome - and before long, you'll realise you've indeed improved. And then, you can proudly look back and say, "Yes, I've done it. And I'm proud of myself."

"You may not know where you'll be in the future. But wherever you are, do your best in everything. God will watch over you." I thank God for this person who told me this.

So, to all those who made it possible for me to stand here today, who lent me a helping hand and a listening ear in times of need - to my family, Aaron, Janani, Randy, Robby, Nicholas, Jane, Riane, Gary and the many others - Thank you. For the true friendship we share.

As the adage goes: "Never judge a book by its cover", I can only agree by saying "how true".

I've made a general observation on my way to school everyday as I rush into the crowded train and be prepared to be sandwiched - Singaporeans are not rude, or unfriendly, they just don't smile.

Recently, my friend was labelled as being "fierce", just as I was back in Secondary school, especially when we did not smile. "Arrogant" probably comes into the picture as well. However, after many of our friends began to know us, they realised that we weren't like that. It was all in a simple action of smiling that broke the ice.

I was often under the notion that Singaporeans are not a courteous bunch - not at all. And I always tend to compare how we're treated when I go overseas, especially to Western countries. Westerners love to help, love to interect with their neighbours, are very welcoming group of people and essentially - love to smile. Hence they are often deemed as approachable and nice. And they have shaped a community that is sharing.

So one day, I decided to put this theory to a test - If Singaporeans are truly rude or not. I tasked myself to smile to people - anyone who comes along the way, especially those who looked really fierce with their big eyes and stand-offish attitude, and those who walked with their noses up in the air.

You'll be surprised. I smiled to an old lady who seemed nonchalent about absolutely anything, a female working executive who had a sharp look and seemed to own the world, the man who distributed TODAY newspaper to me, and an old man who just needed a seat. All of their faces broke into a geuine smile, with hints of warmth in their all-so-brown eyes. Their smiles brightened up my day.

Then just another day, I saw this little girl (whom I reckon is about 9 years old) carrying her heavy school bag walking into the mrt. She was sandwiched in between many people and couldn't get to hold onto a bar. During the mrt ride, she almost fell, and I held on to her. She started searching for the hand on her bony shoulder that supported her, and when she saw my face, she simply smiled. And that smile creeped into my heart.

Just a simple action on our part can brighten someone's day.

My conclusion: Singaporeans are just like our country - Beautiful. They only need to smile to spread their love to the world.

So today, just SMILE to whoever you meet. =)

Pertaining to the debate about Singaporeans feeling the need to speak good english, which burst into the press sometime last week, I decided to engage my friends in a discussion.

My question to them was: Do you think that there is a need for Singaporeans to speak good English? All of them agreed unanimously, citing that Singapore is a global Education Hub amongst the rest of the credentials Singapore aims to achieve or already has. In addition, Singapore have poised herself as the booming business area, managing to attract top Multinational Cooporations (MNCs) such as the Pfizer, GlaxoKlineSmith and Hewlett-Packard to set up their factories here. Naturally this would lead to a substential influx of foreign talents into the Singapore scene. Hence, speaking good english would be necessary when dealing with business partners and in your work place, especially if you happen to have an Ang-moh boss - was their verdict.

My second question then was: Do you think to inculcate that speaking-of-good-english habit in them, people should begin by speaking good english at home? Again, they agreed unanimously.

Then I continued to ask: So do you think Singlish should be abandoned by Singaporeans? Mixed reviews were given for supporting and opposing arguments, but eventually they arrived at a consenses that Singlish is part and parcel of Singaporeans, and should be seen as our culture, a unique selling point of Singapore that defines us. Hence, it should not be abandoned.

How then can we achieve a society that speaks good english?

Speaking good english has to be a conscious effort on one's part - to eliminate the 'lah's and 'lor's. It is no overnight business.

Probably in the near future, with the rate of advanced technology, Singapore would hire a top scientist specially tasked to design a machine that transforms a person - his way of talking and his vocabulary bank. So Singaporeans have only to step into the machine and out, and *poof!*, a new breed of Singaporean elites are borned - poised to take the world stage by storm.

Talk about a government working for the people - fulfilling their needs, hearing their views, and working out policies to up their standard of living - Thailand appears to be doing just the opposite.

With the protest still on-going, plunging the economy into dire situation, the people into fear, and putitng a toll on the burgeousies, Thailand cannot do worse than that.

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) should realise that its protests that resulted in 1 dead and many wounded so far is going nowhere, especially with PM Samak making a crystal clear stand of defiance in response to PAD's request that he step down.

Speculations were that Mr. Samak had paid a visit to the King to tender his resignation, and he was expected to announce his resignation via a radio broadcast this morning at 8:30 a.m. Singapore time. However, he caught everyone by surprise when he said in a 50-minute national radio address, "Don't even think I am going to quit..I cannot leave because under a democratic system no one group can force me to resign..", adding that this saga is a disgrace to the nation. Mr. Samak had also emphasized repeatedly that he will "stay and protect democracy and the monarchy".

So, the question boils down to: Did he actually have the King's backing? If he did, wouldn't it be better to clarify? After all, the King is held in high regard by all the Thais - not to mention the PAD, who proudly declared that they can "lay down our lives for the King".

As the King has not shown his face to clear the air, many Thais are inclined to believe that their King is threatened by Samak.

I believe that the King should, at this stage, to step forth to state his stand pertaining to the escalating situation before Thailand finds it hard to pull out of economic recession due to low investor's confidence and low consumers spending.

At this point in time, probably only the King can settle this matter with no use for the military or violence.

Amidst the escalating oil prices which eventually resulted in many Malaysians being unable to go home for Eid Al Fitr, and Anwar's promises of achieving at least 30 defectors by September 16, Gerakan has propelled the politics to new heights with a shocking statement of quitting Barisan Nasional (BN).

BN is currently led by the unpopular Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, who have been under tremendous pressure from both his own party United Malays National Organisation (Umno) and opposition party PR led by Mr. Anwar Ibrahim.

The BN comprises of 3 main parties, namely the Umno, Gerakan and the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA).

BN saw its unprecedented failure reflected in the polls during the March 8 elections, which indicates an extremely low level of trust the Malaysians have in the current BN-led government.

Accusations against Mr. Abdullah Badawi includes abuse of power, corruption and negotiated tenders with the government mainly channelled to Umno-associated companies, hence fuelling the citizen's anger. Badawi, sad to say, has never been able to shake all these accusations off, but instead found himself sinking deeper and deeper into the mud.

Dr Lim Keng Yaik's speech today can only serve to push Mr. Badawi to the point of no return. Dr Lim is BN's former president and the most influencial voice of the party. He had openly voiced out his dissatisfactions with the party, especially its crumbling defeat during the March elections.

According to The Malaysian Insider, Dr Lim did not have high hopes of the existing and next generation of political leaders to be enlightened on the dismal situation and to bring revival to the party. He added that Umno's defeat this year is mainly due to the "worst kind of Umno arrogance as a result of the 2004 elections", businesses awarded to Umno-associated companies that were primarily decided by "the Ministry of Finance..and not the Cabinet". Dr Lim also expressed concerns over the rising prices that are no regulated, racism and how Hindraf complicated the situation by making its debut into the political arena.

Hindraf (Hindu Rights Action Force) staged government protests late last year against alleged discrimination against the ethenic-Indians. When questioned about whether Umno understood the underlying message that the citizens sent to them on March 8, Dr Lim gave a no.

However, Dr Lim appeared to be willing to grant Umno one last chance for redemption.

After digesting all the the media has willingly been feeding me with, doubts clouded my mind. Let's explore them one by one.

Firstly, why did Dr Lim only voiced out his opinion now? As Abdullah is hanging at the brink of exile from his Prime Minister's seat, is Dr Lim's speech ultimately trying to destroy him or lend him a helping hand? Is this only a ploy by BN to redeem themselves by asking a highly regarded leader to express his displeasure - which happens to coincide with what the majority of the population are thinking - then say that he is willing to grant the party one more chance? As long as the people knows that someone in power understands their point of view, and he is willing to give the party a chance, the people may follow suit. This move then woos all the supporters back to Mr. Badawi and party again.

The second scenario can be that Dr Lim has been quietly taking in all the displeasure until he decides that he can no longer tolerate silently and decides to break out of BN. However, Dr Lim holds a high position in the party. Couldn't he have done something or voiced out his opinions when he realises that Umno is travelling in the wrong direction? Why now? This is the most crucial question.

The third scenario: Dr Lim is bribed by Mr. Anwar Ibrahim. His speech is timely, especially to Anwar's promise that he will gather enough defectors by Sept 16 to topple the current coalition.

Ponder over these doubts I've raised.

And feel free to email me on any comments of your own analysis! :)

Right before the Republicans were able to launch a counter-attack on the Obama campaign, they were smacked right in the face first.

First was the "timely" arrival of Hurrican Gustav that is raging through New Orleans like an angry old grandmother. Though Gustav have been controlling its temper between Category 1 and 2, experts say Gustav is expected to go up to Category 5, stating that it is the "Mother of all storms".

Then came Palin's dirty linens being washed in public while the Republicans are still busy being political and all-so-sympathetic about the Gustav rage. Doubts were already raised when McCain first introduced his little-known Vice Presidential candidate, sources stating that he has only met her 6 months ago, and only interviewed her once before the decision was made. Rash? "No", McCain said, defending his choice of the former Beauty Queen and Alaskan governor. He added that Mrs. Sarah Palin was "critically reviewed" and met the criteria before the decision was finalized.

However, now that news of Palin's 17-year old daughter Bristol Palin is close to five months pregnant and is unwed again threatens to topple the McCain campaign. Though Palin have stated that her daughter will be marrying the baby's father and is due to give birth in December, her lack of governence in her own household is already in a mess - as viewed by many. There are speculations, however, that Palin's 5th child is actually her daughter's.

To add oil to the fire, both Palin and her husband have been involved in police cases.

Can the Republicans survive this ordeal?

All I know is, John McCain is sharper than he looks.

Eye-grabbing news of Thailand's political situation have been dominating the media lately. The furore began when opposition party PAD began gathering more than 200,000 protesters to date, staging a protest in front of the government house to demand the step-down of PM Samak.

During this period, PM Samak have repeatedly stated his stand that he will not step down, arguing that he had not done anything wrong and will continue to serve the nation as a Prime Minister.

A Parliamentary meeting was called 2 days ago by PAD leaders who triggered the start of the demonstration. However, the meeting was dissolved to no more than a blame game as neither parties made concession. As a result, no agreement has been reached.

While the PAD have been withering under the blazing sun day and night, they failed to realise that what they have been doing is proven to be a futile effort - and definitely not to the citizens benefit. It is contradictory, since they claim to be fighting for the rights of the citizens and the citizens affair is of their top concern. The economy is in red light as Thailand experience a high inflation and a fall in shares reflecting investor's confidence in the economy.

Even by threatening to cut the power and water supply, PAD got to think what's best for them and the people at the end of the day.

It's time to think for the people's best interests, PAD.

If there is no upturn to the situation, Thailand may very well be on its way to desitute - caused by none other than the Thais themselves.
